I have to admit, regrettably, that I haven't interacted with Anne of Green Gables personally, either in film or literature. However, her reputation precedes her and this post was the push I needed to meet the girl for myself. Will be returning once I have read the original, and then maybe I'll be convinced to try one of these adaptations, too! Excited to read more from you xxx

I had a feeling you and I might just be “kindred spirits” (one of Anne’s many quotable phrases), and I have no doubt you’ll love Anne. I’m so glad I could introduce you!

That’s an excellent idea to start with the book, and then, yes, please do come back for more on the adaptions (and to share your thoughts on the original, of course!). I’m not sure how far into the post you got, but I highly recommend Apple Books’ free, unabridged audiobook read by Kae Marie Denino - especially if, like me, you prefer to listen or need to multitask. However, since the novel’s in the public domain, it should be easy to access in whatever form you like best. I really am excited for you to experience this classic (not to mention, downright jazzed you took me up on my recommendation); I think it’ll be right up your alley. Take time to enjoy (no pressure or expectations from me at all), and I’ll look forward to continuing this chat whenever you return from the pages of Green Gables.

Thanks so much for being my very first subscriber! I can’t quite express what an encouragement that is to me, except to say you‘ve absolutely made my day. <3 (I’m excited to read more from you, too!)

What a thoughtful review! I have never connected with the adaptations as much as I did with the book; I craved the level of detail and intimacy that only the book could convey, as much as I enjoyed the Sullivan miniseries & its amazing costuming. I'm also not an audiobook/audiodrama person generally but I'm tempted by what you have to say of the Audible version; the casting sounds really great. (And Sandra Oh as a narrator? Come on!)

Oh, nothing beats the book - you’re absolutely right. In that sense, I’m glad I experienced the miniseries and film series first, as I developed a love and appreciation for them on their own while unknowingly saving the best for last. (The descriptiveness is what gets me. And there are some precious scenes that have yet to make it in to an adaption - one of my favorites being Anne’s thoughts on the picture of Jesus with the children.)

The Audible version still may be worth it for you, if only to hear the book brought to life. (Of course, it doesn’t capture everything - and modifies quite a lot of what it does - but some passages are preserved word for word.) And yes, though the cast is great, it’s really Sandra Oh’s show. She’s interwoven throughout, and I was well into a re-listen before I realized while I didn’t consciously notice her, she was keeping me fully engaged. That must be such a difficult balance to strike (driving the story without distracting from it), and she does so perfectly.

Thanks so much for subscribing! You‘ve absolutely made my day. (I look forward to reading more from you, too!)
